BNSF LPKC Conductor Bar Design

Services Provided:
  • Structural Design
  • Technology Development
  • Design-Build Project Delivery
Overview:
REMPREX provided design and project management for the installation of a medium-voltage conductor bar power supply for the rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes and BNSF’s Logistics Park Kansas City Intermodal Facility. BNSF turned to REMPREX to investigate the provision of an alternative means of power to the electric cranes that previously used a tethering cable for power and data connectivity. To overcome the operational limitations of the cable power, REMPREX proposed the use of a conductor bar system, which allowed for the unrestricted movement of all five wide-span cranes along the entire 8,000-foot length of ramp track. In addition to researching and vetting conductor bar system manufacturers that could provide the components required for this application, REMPREX provided complete design services for a unique support structure, which allowed for above-ground support for the conductor-bar system using a series of T-bar structures.
Highlights:
12%
Under Budget
The design economically incorporated the conductor bar system into an intermodal site layout that was already under construction. The timeline of this project required diligent coordination with on-site contractors, who were working on the existing site construction, and BNSF stakeholders in order to find a solution that made the most of existing site features and plans. REMPREX provided a single point of contact for the design-build project and performed all structural and civil design for the support structure, which was fabricated by a third party. REMPREX managed the installation of the structure, foundations, and conductor bar system, and performed all quality assurance and commissioning required to get the system operational. REMPREX completed the project with a 40% compressed construction schedule due to delays in site construction, and 12% under budget.
